Tutored Wine Tasting - North & South American Wines

17th October 2012

As part of our collection of wine dinners, our next event focuses on North and South American wines. Both continents have regions capable of producing wine, but again the sheer range in style is largely unknown.

It is believed that since the 16th Century, the grapes used for making wine in South America are the same breed as European grapes. American winemakers have been visiting Europe, in particular France, to export vines and ideas since the 18th Century. Consequently, there is no doubt as to the heritage and potential of this extensive area.

We have generally come to believe that South American wine is good value and widely recognised as easy to find and even easier to drink. There are of course many estates striving for higher quality and individuality, so it’s no accident that many top French names have launched projects there. The resulting wines are superb, but often more expensive.

The picture is quite different in North America, with many areas outside of California such as Oregon, Washington State and Virginia, producing wine. However these excellent wines are rarely seen on the market because so little is known about their existence.

North America has, and still uses, its own breeds of grapes for winemaking; it is generally accepted though that the introduced European variety makes the best quality of all.

The top boutique estates of California often only yield very small amounts of wine made available for export, much of which is already allocated to private clients. These wines are often expensive, and have tended towards impressing critics and judges with power and body, rather than to Sommeliers looking to match restaurant menus; they are therefore less likely to appear on restaurant wine lists.

This evening we will introduce you to some superb wines from highly respected growers that haven’t yet been matched with fine cuisine.
